India's trade barriers have been questioned in the WTO

2024-06-03

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Import Licence Committee discussed at the May 21st meeting the laptop import licensing measures that India announced in August but quickly withdrew. Japan and China have formally raised concerns about this measure. Spring Terminal blockGX16 connector and plastic reflectors should be noted.
India's measures may already affect laptops and tablets made by US companies in China, as nearly 90 percent of its imported tablets and PCs will come from China. But other countries targeting India's fast-growing tablet market are increasingly questioning any similar move to restrict imports.
The WTO License Committee discussed improving the transparency of the members 'import licensing system and encouraged the use of the WTO's import licensing notification portal. At the meeting, China and Japan raised concerns about India's measures on personal computers, tablets and other electronics; Indonesia questioned India's import monitoring of viscose staple fibers; and Chinese Taipei and Thailand discussed import monitoring of inflatable tires.
Last year, the United States, China, South Korea and Chinese Taipei raised concerns about India's import restrictions at the WTO's Market Access Committee, while South Korea stressed that India's measures may not comply with WTO rules and could create unnecessary trade barriers.
India's trade barriers are designed to promote indigenous manufacturing. However, the establishment of trade barriers may attract widespread attention and opposition from the international community, increase the uncertainty of the global supply chain, and bring significant challenges to the export of Chinese enterprises.
